There’s something about summer in Italy that just feels different.
The days are long, the Adriatic is warm, and the usual pace of life slows. Evenings are spent outside, plans are made at the last minute, and there always seems to be another festival, dinner or invitation around the corner.
While some of Italy’s better-known destinations become overwhelmed during the height of the season, Le Marche still has that wonderful feeling of being in on a secret. And if there was ever a time that captures La Dolce Vita, it’s summer.
Mornings Made for the Adriatic
Summer days often start by the sea, before the midday heat really sets in.
The coastline is at its liveliest, with colourful umbrellas lining the beaches and local families settling into their favourite spots for the day. We love heading to places such as Cupra Marittima where a morning swim can easily turn into lunch at one of our favourite beachfront chalets Koko Beach.
There’s no need to rush home. Order something fresh from the sea, enjoy a cold drink overlooking the Adriatic and settle in for the afternoon and evening.
When the Villages Come Alive
Throughout the season, local festas and events bring communities together to celebrate regional dishes, local wine and traditions that have been passed down through generations. Streets that are usually wonderfully quiet fill with long tables, music, and people catching up late into the evening.
They’re not events created for tourists. They’re part of summer life here, and joining in gives you a glimpse of the community and traditions that make Le Marche so special.
The Flavours of an Italian Summer
Of course, summer in Italy is always going to revolve around food.
Markets are overflowing with seasonal produce, while restaurant menus make the most of ingredients at their best. Ripe tomatoes need little more than olive oil and salt, seafood arrives fresh from the Adriatic, and gelato becomes an entirely acceptable part of the daily routine.
Golden Hour in the Piazza
This is perhaps our favourite part of a summer day. Tables spill into the piazza, children play nearby, and an aperitivo can quite easily turn into dinner when nobody feels particularly inclined to leave.
There’s often music somewhere in the distance, another familiar face stopping to say hello and no real reason to check the time. You simply sit back with a glass of something local and watch the evening unfold. One of our favourite places to sit is Bar Tre Archi, where you’re surrounded by the buzzing energy.
Ferragosto
One of the best times to visit during the summer is the middle of August, where you can join in the Ferragosto celebrations on the 15th. The restaurants are buzzing and it's one of the most important days of the year. We spent this year celebrating with family and friends at Koko Beach…it was a real party 🥂 and there might have been a few sore heads the next day.
To be drinking, eating, dancing and laughing with our Italian friends is the true essence of la dolce vita.
