Le Marche

Le Marche, Italy in one Region

“If one had to decide which Italian landscape was the most typical,
you’d have to choose the Marche… Italy, with its range of landscapes,
is a distillation of the world; the Marche is a distillation of Italy.”
G. Piovene, Viaggio in Italia, 1957
The basic facts:

180km of coastline, stunningly beautiful beaches,
26 cities facing the Adriatic Sea that are ideal sites for a relaxing holiday, the port of Ancona and 9 tourist harbours. 500 piazzas, 1000 important monuments, over 100 cities boasting great works of art, 1000's of churches ( 200 of which are Romanesque), 183 religious shrines, 34 archaeological sites, 72 historic theatres. The largest number of museums and galleries in Italy: 342 in 239 boroughs. 315 libraries housing over 4 million volumes. Several protected areas: 2 national parks (Monti Sibillini, Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga), 4 regional parks (Monte Conero, Sasso Simone and Simoncello, Monte San Bartolo, Gola della Rossa and di Frasassi), 5 nature reserves (Abbadia di Fiastra, Gola del Furlo, Montagna di Torricchio, Ripa Bianca and Sentina), more than 100 floristic areas and 15 state forests.

Le Marche offers you a region which is still incredibly unspoilt and full of classic Italian charm and culture. Situated halfway down the east coast of Italy, Le Marche has over 180km of coastline, stunningly beautiful beaches and 26 medieval cities facing the turquoise Adriatic Sea.

Please watch this excellent video about the province of Le Marche:

The Liberty style villas, palms, oleander, bougainvillea and maritime pines give it a truly Mediterranean feel. Here you can see the importance of the fishing industry and at the many ports you can watch the boats returning with their catch ready to distribute to the many excellent fish restaurants that can be found in every town and village. The hills and valleys of Le Marche are some of the most beautiful in Italy. More rolling than the north with a greater concentration of hilltop villages and a greater variation in agriculture and horticulture, creating the magical patchwork quilt of colours throughout the year. The extraordinary natural beauty of the hills is matched by the wonder of its town and villages. The true heart of this region is in the small historic centres. Here you will discover the real Le Marche and its people. Each village has its own history which is reflected in its design and architecture, art, traditions, customs, cuisine, Sagras and festivals.
